Bucket List 2021
While I love the idea of a New Year’s Resolution, I know that resolutions are just a bunch of bullshit. First off, let’s take a look at the definition.
Resolution: a firm decision to do or not to do something. Wow. That sounds fun.
“She made a resolution to never drunk text her ex at 2am ever again.” We literally set ourselves up for failure when we set resolutions. With no wiggle room for mistakes or set backs, it’s an automatic fail if we slip up even once. We have that one drink. Then we have that one shot. Then we have another. And next thing we know we’re on the floor of a bathroom in Tigerland sending “u up?” texts to Chad, your super gross ex boyfriend.
This is why I leave my “New Year’s Resolutions” to monthly goals instead. It’s easier to track and stay on top of because there is a clear finish line. 4 weeks is significantly easier to get to the end of than 52. Not to mention how much my goals change throughout the year that I can’t possibly stick to the same ones for an entire year… but maybe that’s just me.
Now let’s look at the definition for a Bucket List.
Bucket List: A number of experiences or achievements that a person hopes to have or accomplish during their lifetime [or… say… 2021].
Why not do things that, as Marie Kondo would say, spark joy in my life? I’m not saying go do coke off a stripper. I’m not saying go chop heads off barbie dolls. If that is what sparks joy in your life, therapy should be your first stop in 2021 (Disclaimer: everyone including myself could use a therapist) What I’m trying to get at is instead of writing out this long list of rules you need to adhere to, why not make a list of fun things to try to do that would make your year more enjoyable and memorable that still better your life??
When I think of bucket list, I think of fun adventures. When I look back at 2021, I don’t want to just think wow I spent all of this year drinking only celery juice, having multiple mental breakdowns, and lived a very average and bland year. I want to do things and learn things and put my energy in the right space.
So, without further ado, here’s some of my bucket list for 2021:
Adventure:
Run my marathon! It’s at the tippity top of the list because it’s one of the only things on the list that is actually scheduled at the moment. March 7th!
National Park Race: My mom and I have been wanting to travel and wanting to do another race in a different state so why not combine the two? There is a whole series of races that go through different national parks and I’m dying to do one.
Sky Dive. Because this makes it to the bottom of my list every year and I never get to it. So. This year, it’s in the top 3 so it can finally get it’s prime time.
Camping. Because it has been awhile and I really want to go camping. In a damn tent. In the middle of nowhere. And if not in the middle of nowhere, then somewhere that doesn’t have a target within like a 20 mile radius.
Get back on a horse. No. Literally. It’s been 3 years since I’ve been on a horse. 3 YEARS. I never in my life thought I would go three whole years without having this butt on a horse.
Travel somewhere new! Now, I know COVID is still an obvious concern, but I will accept a road trip. Hell, it could be in the same state as long as it’s somewhere new. It can be a girl’s trip, a trip with my boyfriend, with my mom, with my family, or a solo trip!
Buy the adventure challenge book. Here she is. I think it would be fun to do some of the activities with friends or my boyfriend.
Learn to play tennis. I almost didn’t put this one on here solely because I’m crossing this one off tonight. But fuck it. It deserves to be put on here so I can cross it off. Yay tennis lessons!
Learn to play golf. Mainly because I really dislike being not good at a sport and if I go play Top Golf, I need to at least know how to hit the ball.
Get into bike riding! First, I need to buy a bike… but hey. It’s on the list. This one is really for my mom. She saw my aunt with a bike. She decided she wanted a bike. Now we are both getting bikes and are going to start riding trails together. It’ll be fun… once I buy the bikes.
Productivity/Mental Health
Read more classics! I mean, if I read just one this year, it’s more than I’m currently reading.
Volunteer! I’ve felt called for sometime to get more involved in the community in anyway I can.
Watch all of the Star Wars Movies! No, I haven’t watched them all. Yes, I’m a little embarrassed by it. No, I don’t know what I was doing between mental breakdowns during 2020 quarantine…
Save x amount of monies. I won’t disclose the number. But my savings is looking a little scarce. We gonna fix that.
Cook 12 new recipes. While I currently have it planned out to do a new recipe a month, life doesn’t always work out how you plan. And when you over plan and fail one month, it winds up being exactly like a failed resolution. SO if I do one recipe in January and 11 in December, then so be it!
Work on my Spanish. I took like 3 years of Spanish in high school and remember maybe half of it. I can catch a word or two in a sentence on occasion, but I’d rather be able to catch every word and be able to reply in Spanish as well.
Keep posting blogs. No number. No pressure. Just stay consistent and keep posting what you want.
Focus on self. Because I tend to focus on others first and while I sometimes love that about myself, it can be more harmful than helpful. 2021. Year of me.
Be healthy. And I mean this in the most mentally aware way. Because after a year like the last, this should be a top priority to strive for.
Be happy. Because if there’s only one thing I desire to cross off this list by the end of this year, it’s this one.
I’m super excited for this year. I’m really trying to focus on what is important and just focus on myself and my happiness. I can’t wait to start crossing things off!
